Since 1st July 2007, the
import of wild-caught birds into the EU is banned.
The new health rules for the import of wild birds
were agreed in January 2007. This measure is based
on the European
Food Safety Authority's recommendations on
animal health and welfare risks of wild birds
imports, published in October 2006.
Under these new rules, only birds bred in captivity
from selected countries can be imported in the
EU. Strict conditions are set for breeding establishments
in these countries, and for quarantine stations
in importing EU Member States. Birds have to be
identified individually through a microchip or
a leg-ring.
A temporary ban on the import of wild birds from
non-EU countries had already been in place since
October 2005.
