ABOUT EUROGROUP FOR ANIMALS

Eurogroup for Animals represents a united voice for animal welfare organisations in Europe. We speak for animals and for the millions of European citizen who are concerned about the way animals are treated.

Since our founding in 1980 we have achieved great things for animals by contributing to the development and adoption of some of the highest legal standards of animal protection in the world.

WHAT WE DO

We provide advice and expertise on animal welfare to the European institutions – the Council of Ministers, the European Parliament and the European Commission.

We work hard to ensure that animal welfare is taken into account in all relevant European policy areas and that European laws designed to protect animals are adopted and enforced.

We use our scientific and technical expertise to bring about effective and sustainable change which benefits both animals and people.

We work to protect:

farm animals by working with producers, retailers, consumers and governments
animals used in research by working with industry and governments to replace animal tests with alternative methods
wild animals by campaigning for better lives for those kept in captivity and by working to eliminate the threats from humans they face in the wild and through trade.

On those two last areas, Eurogroup for Animals works in collaboration with its sister organisation EWLA (Eurogroup for Wildlife and Laboratory Animals), with support from the European Commission.

Unfortunately, there are still areas which cannot be regulated by the EU, such as the keeping of companion animals, because the Treaty provides no legal basis for the introduction of legislation specifically intended to improve the welfare of animals, and because some areas are the exclusive responsibility of Member States. These areas should be covered by national legislation. For more information read the section on animal welfare in the Treaty.
